Comment:
The definite article kel/kes overlaps in use with the demonstrative kel/kes. One could assume that the definite reading gradually evolved from the demonstrative and that there may have been a stage where definiteness could only be conveyed via a bare noun. Furthermore, a bare noun is also interpretable as definite and is in many cases the preferred option to convey definiteness (see Baptista & Gueron 2007).
