Only a few adjectives optionally agree with nouns, particularly those that modify a human's physical trait, such as colour (branku 'white (masc.)', branka 'white (feminine)'; preta 'black (fem.)'; pretu 'black (masc.)'), height (altu 'tall (masc.)', alta 'tall (fem.)') or nationality (kabuverdianu 'Cape Verdean (masc.)', kabuverdiana 'Cape Verdean (fem.)').
