English is the main language used in non-Gurindji institutions such as the Kalkaringi council office, welfare office, health clinic and shop. Most of the people employed in these institutions are non-indigenous Australians who are predominantly English speakers. These people rarely attempt to learn Gurindji or Gurindji Kriol when they live in Kalkaringi. Gurindji Kriol is only used when Gurindji people speak with locally trained council or clinic workers. In this respect, Gurindji Kriol and Gurindji have no official standing in these institutions.
