Datapoint Singapore Bazaar Malay/a - low central unrounded vowel

This vowel, represented as in writing, can occur in all positions in Bazaar Malay words. Some speakers who have been exposed to Standard Malay or non-Standard
Malay used in the central and southern peninsula may well pronounce the sound represented by the letter a as the schwa when it occurs in word-final open syllables (see Asmah 1977: 2; Mintz 1994: 7). In this case, the syllable containing the schwa is unstressed, as is the case when it occurs elsewhere. However, no informant of this study was observed to use schwa for /a/.
