Datapoint Mauritian Creole/ɛ - lower mid front unrounded vowel

[ɛ] is an allophone of /e/, and almost as frequent as [e], these two being in complementary distribution in modern Mauritian Creole ([ɛ] in closed syllables, [e] in open syllables). [ɛ] is treated as the minor allophone on historical grounds in that 19th century texts frequently indicate [e] in both open and closed syllables.
