Man can be used to denote not only the bodypart (hand) but also any part of an object which is held or manipulated by hand, e.g. doorhandle, broomstick. Additionally, we find idiomatic expressions where man appears to refer to 'arm' rather than 'hand', suggesting that man may be an older form than brasa. For instance, batata di man [potato of hand] alternates with batata di brasa [potato of arm], both 'arm muscle'.
