The language is the main means of interaction in the public and private domain in the traditional villages along the Maroni and Tapanahoni and Lawa rivers.

In western French Guiana and in Eastern Suriname, Nengee or Sranan, or a newly developing language (Léglise & Migge 2006) is used to faciliate communication with people who do not speak French/Dutch; this usage is subject to quite a bit of variation.
