Datapoint Afrikaans/Domains of use: public contexts

Jackson (2003) mentions that nowadays one cannot expect to be able to use Afrikaans in a post office or a public institution, while this always used to be possible in the past. Whether Afrikaans can be used in public contexts depends principally, I imagine, on the persons involved and their (lack of) ability to speak the language (as there are many languages spoken in South-Africa), not because of it being considered inappropriate. The chances of it to be used in public context will probably be high in regions where many Afrikaans speaking people live, while in other areas where there are much less or hardly any Afrikaans speaking people, the chance will be very low.
