Datapoint Nigerian Pidgin/Urban/rural variation: phonology

While there is significant variation in the phonology of rural and other basilectal varieties of Nigerian Pidgin due to influence from local languages, and significant variation in the phonology of urban and acrolectal varieties of Nigerian Pidgin due to influence from English, phonological variation does not normally impede mutual intelligibility between rural and urban mesolectal speakers of the language.
