- Note that in the Spanish of Palenque, the word pelo is used. Pelo is not normally used in the creole, as kabeo is given preference. Kabeo is likely to have been derived from Portuguese cabelo 'hair' and not from Spanish cabello 'hair', since this latter form would not have given rise (phonetically) to /kabeo/ but to /kabeyo/.
